5-Day Devotional: Finding God in the Ashes
Day 1: The Ministry of Presence
Reading: Job 2:11-13; Romans 12:15
Devotional: Job's friends began perfectly—they wept, sat in silence, and simply stayed. For seven days, they offered the gift of presence without words. This is the ministry we're all called to: being with people in their pain. When someone suffers, our instinct is to fix, explain, or offer spiritual platitudes. But God calls us to something deeper—to weep with those who weep. Your presence communicates what words cannot: "You are not alone." Today, consider who in your life needs you to simply show up. Don't bring answers or explanations. Bring yourself. Sit in their ashes. Let your compassionate presence reflect the God who never leaves us, even in our darkest moments.

Devotional: When the disciples saw a blind man, they immediately searched for someone to blame. "Who sinned?" they asked. Jesus' answer shattered their formula: "Neither." Not all suffering is punishment. Sometimes we live in a broken world where pain happens to righteous people. If you're carrying guilt that God hasn't assigned, release it today. The enemy loves to pile false shame onto genuine suffering, whispering that you somehow deserve this pain. But our compassionate Father knows our frame and remembers we are dust. He doesn't keep a scorecard of wrongs to punish. Reject the lie that your suffering proves God's displeasure. Instead, embrace the truth: God is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.

We often believe we must approach God with polished prayers and perfect faith. But the Psalms teach us otherwise—God invites our brutal honesty. He's not intimidated by your doubt, your grief, or your hard questions. Pour out your heart before Him. Tell Him about your frustration, your disappointment, your fear. God doesn't need you to pretend everything is fine. He already knows it isn't. What He desires is relationship, and relationship requires honesty. Today, pray without performing. Bring God the prayers you've been afraid to pray. He can handle your truth.

Devotional: Job's friends spoke theological truths, but at the wrong time, in the wrong way, with the wrong heart. They wielded doctrine like a weapon instead of medicine. Truth applied without wisdom becomes cruelty. A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver, but the same word spoken without compassion can devastate. Before you share a Bible verse with someone who's hurting, ask: Is this what they need right now? Am I speaking to comfort them or to make myself feel better? Sometimes the most biblical response isn't a Scripture quote—it's a hug, a meal, or silent companionship. Speak truth in love, yes, but let love determine the timing and manner of your truth-telling.

Because Jesus suffered innocently, you can approach His throne of grace with confidence, knowing He understands. Whatever ashes you're sitting in today, look up. Your Savior is there with you, and His presence transforms everything. You are seen, known, loved, and never abandoned.
